Chapter 15
The next morning, Jo stopped at Sandy’s Donuts on her way to work. Her team deserved an occasional treat, and Sandy’s had the best donuts in town. When she got to the station, she left the box on the table in the conference room.
At her desk, she listened to a voicemail message from Bonnie Purvis, who said she would be home all morning. Jo gave her a call and arranged an eleven o’clock meeting at the woman’s house. She jotted down the address and shoved the note in her pocket.
Through her office door, she saw a tall man step off the elevator. His black hair was long enough to curl over his collar, and his North Face ski jacket pulled tightly across his broad chest. He carried a cardboard evidence box through the bull pen, nodding at people with such ease that they nodded back, even though they probably wondered who he was. Most people walking into a homicide unit appeared guilty, terrified, or in mourning. Jo knew without question it was Kip Jurgens.
She fired off a quick email to her team: Morning briefing in fifteen minutes. When she looked up again, Lynae was already greeting their visitor. Kip perched the evidence box on his hip, stretched out his hand, and smiled. Jo couldn’t hear what Lynae said, but her words made the handsome detective let out a hearty laugh. When Lynae motioned toward her office, she took the cue and headed out the door to meet him.
After grabbing her case-files notebook and coffee cup, Jo walked over to Lynae’s desk. She set down her stuff and held out her hand. “Detective Jurgens, I assume. Jo Riskin.”
The detective smiled warmly. “Please call me Kip.”
“Thanks for making the trip. Did you have a good drive?”
“My pleasure. It’s an easy drive between Toledo and Grand Rapids. The traffic was a little heavier than anticipated, or I would have been here earlier.”
Jo glanced at her watch. “You must have left early.”
Kip grinned, deep lines creasing the edges of his piercing blue eyes. “I told you I was an early riser. And I'm eager to see what you have.”
Jo motioned toward the briefing room. “I’m looking forward to putting our heads together on this too. I waited until you got here to brief my team, so we’ll start there.”
“Sounds like a good place to start,” he replied, hoisting the evidence box onto the corner of Lynae’s neat desk.
“I’ve got a conference room reserved for the day. My office leaves a little to be desired.”
“If it's bigger than a standard walk-in closet, you've got me beat.”
His voice was like silk, and Jo detected a hint of the South. She lost her train of thought for a second and was saved by her partner.
“I’ll show you where the important things are, like coffee,” Lynae said, picking up her coffee and notebook.
Kip eased into a beguiling smile. “That would be fantastic.”
Jo followed the pair into the break room. Lynae pulled a blue-and-gold GRPD coffee mug out of the overhead cabinet, filled it with coffee, and passed it to Kip.
